Volcanic minerals behind mystery elephantiasis outbreak in Uganda

( CNN) Since 2015, state officials in Uganda have received reports of increasing numbers of people suffering from elephantiasis, a debilitating canker been characterised by severe swelling in the limbs.

Clusters of cases were reported by regional nongovernmental organizations in the Kamwenge District of Western Uganda, although countries of the region wasn’t known to be affected or at risk for the condition.

The disease is typically caused by illnes with parasitic worms, transmitted via particular mosquito categories. But an investigation by the country’s Ministry of Health has divulged a brand-new root begin: volcanic soil.
