Superbug C. auris identified in 122 people across 7 states, CDC says

( CNN) The number of cases of an emerging and often multidrug-resistant fungus in the United States has grown from seven to 122 over the last nine months, according to a field report in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report problem Thursday by the US Core for Disease Control and Prevention.

The fungus, Candida auris, can cause severe illness with high fatality, especially among high-risk cases, including those in intensive care units, those with a primary venous catheter and those who have received antibiotics or antifungal remedies.

“It seems to affect the sickest of the sick cases, particularly those in hospices and nursing homes with other medical problems, ” spoke Sharon Tsay, lead generator and an Epidemic Intelligence Service officer at the CDC.
